Creating a Personal iPhoto Library

These directions assume you will have an account on the FDM Instructional server to store your iPhoto Library. The directions are in three parts: mounting the server, setting the iPhoto Library location, and adding your pictures to the Library.

Mounting the Server

  1. Click on the “desktop”. Select “Go->Connect to Server…” from the top menu.
  2. In the server address field, type “fdm2.ucsc.edu”.  Click on the “Connect” button.
  3. Login with the user name and password provided to you by FDM Operations at the beginning of the quarter (This is not provided to all students).
  4. Once connected, select your user name from “Select the volumes to mount:” window.
  5. Your home directory will now show up on the desktop.

Setting the iPhoto Library Location

  1. Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon located in the dock.
  2. If you have not already created your own library, click on the “Create New…” button to create a new library.  Make sure you “Save As:” to a location in your home directory of the server that you just mounted.
  3. If you have previously created a library and stored it in your home directory on the server, click on “Other Library…” and select the library already stored in your home directory on the server.

Adding Pictures

You have now created your library so you can proceed to hook up your camera or put in your picture CD. When importing your pictures from a camera do not choose “Delete items from camera after importing” in case something unexpected happens. For a video tutorial on how to import from a digital camera check out the Apple iPhoto Tutorials. If you are importing from a CD (or other storage device), go to the “File” menu and choose “Import to Library…”.   Locate the photos and click “Import”.  Additional documentation is available from the “Help” menu within iPhoto.
