AKG SE300B CK91 Cardioid Condenser Microphone

AKG SE300B CK91 Cardioid Microphone

Hardware Description

Specifications and Features:

The AKG SE300B is a microphone output module used in conjunction with a CK91 hyper-cardioid condenser capsule. With this system, the components dedicated to picking-up sound and to powering the signal are separate and independent of one another, allowing different capsules to be used with the same SE300B output module. However, within the F&DM Department and Checkout Lab the CK91 capsule and SE300B output module are collectively referred to as one piece of equipment for the sake of simplicity.

The performance of this microphone system is classified as Cardioid; the standard cardioid polar pick-up pattern has been designed for increased directionality for improved rejection, as compared to omni-directional microphones. The trade-off for this more controlled directionality of the microphone’s sensitivity, however, is slight distortion in the frequency range, again as compared to the flatter frequency-response of omni-directional microphones. While not as “true” in its representation of sound as an omni-directional microphone, cardioid microphones are generally more accurate than hyper-cardioid microphones, and more accurate still of super-directional “shotgun” microphones. For an exact account of the condenser capsule’s performance, consult the manufacturer’s technical literature for corresponding specifications.

The AKG SE300B output module incorporates a switchable 12dB/octave bass-cut filter at 75Hz to elimnate foot-fall noise, and a switchable 10dB pre-attenuation pad for high SPL sound sources.

The SE300B and CK91 microphone system utilize Phantom-power, relying upon the recording device to provide the output module with the power required to send the signal via balanced XLR.

Other Notes:

The F&DM Checkout Lab asks production student to not remove the microphone’s SE300B output module from the AT8415 Shockmount. All of the pistol grips, booms, and microphone stands available for use with the microphone kits have been standardized to the shockmount’s 5/8″ threading, making removal unnecessary.

The F&DM Checkout Lab also asks production student to not remove the CK91 condenser capsule, and therefore to not pack the condenser capsule separately.

The AKG SE300B and CK91 microphone system is Phantom-powered, and must utilize Phantom-power provided by the recording device to operate. The SE300B output module can operate from any 9v to 52v Phantom-power supply.
